Today Zoey rode Wallie for the first time outside. We put Wallie in my old Crosby jumping saddle because it has a narrow tree and I wanted to see if it would stay in place well on him. It did stay in place well, only coming onto his shoulders a time or two, which is often a problem with ponies. |

Zoey rode Wallie walk/trot on the lunge. He rode beautifully, even in the uneven, heavy sand of the outdoor arena. Wallie kept his pace when I tripped over my stick one time. He is very sweet and tries always to have Zoey's best interest at heart even though he is about the same age as she is in horse years. |

Zoey did seatwork exercises without stirrups at the trot. Wallie quickly got used to Zoey moving about on his back and never offered to take off or buck. We took things very slowly and when Wallie had gotten used to having Zoey trot without stirrups, and had found his balance in the heavy sand, Zoey gave him a long break. They walked around the arena, did a couple of backing squeezes, and walked over a few jumps. It was a much earned rest for Wallie. |

After Wallie had walked around a little, Zoey got back on and Wallie was a little lazy. That gave us the perfect opportunity to bring the challenge up a notch to bring his energy up a notch. Zoey rode with stirrups and did the posting trot. Most horses hit the brakes a few times when they feel the rider standing up but Wallie didn't. He kept trotting, staying in a nice rhythm with Zoey, both going left and to the right. The right was a little harder, but it always is. By the end of the lesson, Zoey was even able to ride Wallie in two point for awhile! The best part of the day was the fact that we took Wallie outside into a completely different arena with crazy footing and he still performed like the wonderful gentleman that he is. |
